The National Cadet Corps (N.C.C) unit trains pupils in military science and inculcates discipline in them. It also takes up social service schemes. The Scout movement also gives opportunity to pupils to do social service such as helping the traffic police and controlling the crowds during festivals.

Preservation of wild life

The Nutritious Meal Scheme

Now this scheme has been extended to the high school classes as well. It has been streamlines to function effectively. Educationists all over our country and abroad have welcomed this scheme. Should Examinations be abolished?
Examinations are used to measure the standard of a pupil in a particular subject. But there are some defects in the present system of exams. The pass – minimum in a subject is just 35% or 40%. To get this mark a student need not understand the subject as a whole or concentrate on his studies throughout the year. It is enough if he gets by heart certain expected questions on a particular topic a few weeks before the exam to get in pass. Further, there is scope for copying and subjective valuation by teachers. Citing these drawbacks, some educationists are for abolishing the exam system itself.
This I would say is an extreme step because we have no other yardstick to measure the attainments of a pupil except exams. So, the only alternative is to introduce some reforms in our Exam System. Our Tamil Nadu Education Department is now attempting this. According to the new scheme, unit tests will be held every week. There will be monthly tests preceding the Terminal Exams. Pupils’ attainments in a particular subject will be assessed on the basis of a Cumulative Marks Record and not on the Annual Exam marks alone. This method of valuation will make the pupils study each and every unit in a subject.
Our School Sports meet
The merriest of all the school functions is the Annual Sports Meet. It provides the pupils an opportunity to exhibit their athletic skills and win laurels. So, pupils participate in the various items of sports with great enthusiasm. Last year the Annual Sports Meet was held on 10th September. It was a gala day for us. We decorated the playground and the stadium with flags and festoons. There was a large gathering of pupils and the public. Our District Collector was the Chief Guest. The function started with the lighting of the Olympic torch. Then there was a colorful march-past of the athletes.
The President unfurled the National Flag and took the salute at the march-past. Then he declared the meet open. Then the sports events were held one after another according to the programmer. Races, jumps and throws were some of the events. The hurdles race was a thrilling event. Sub-juniors and girls participated in frog race, sack race, potato picking and musical chair. They were funny items to watch. Tug-of-war was the last item played between the Teachers’ Team and the Parents’ Team. There was tough pulling and falling on both sides. This item was very interesting. The Parents’ Team became the winners.
